Gakuen Heaven

I re-watched Gakuen Heaven. It was great decision, because re-watch raised it to number 2 place of my favourite yaoi anime list. It will be interesting to see if Junjo Romantica can knock it out from that place. Review and fangirling after the jump…

Gakuen Heaven anime is great because of the funny idea behind it. It was originally BL game where guys try to hit the protagonist, boy named Keita. Anime differs from game because main couple is clear from the beginning, but still other students attemt to flirt with Keita and with each other. Gakuen Heaven is like any eroge adaptation, only difference between them is that cute girls are replaced with pretty boys. It´s not reverse harem because protagonist is also a boy. I don´t know what to call Gakuen Heaven, BL harem or what? But like in reverse harem shows, Gakuen Heaven has every common guy type you can imagine. There´s evil twins, shy artist, geeky-but-cool-guy and badass student council + many more. Something for everyone.

Plot twists are predictable and characters clichés, but still Gakuen Heaven attracts me. Major reasons for my liking are cute romance and awesome seiyuus. Keita´s relationship with his best-friend and lover Kazuki is deep and fills every point I want to see at my romance anime. As I mentioned in my previous post, I like to watch how characters love develop. At Gakuen Heaven, Kazuki is obsessed of Keita while Keita isn´t sure of his feelings. They fall in love with each other little by little during the series and in the end, their love gets fulfillment. Romance anime isn´t any good if we don´t see at least a kiss, thanks for not making this error Gakuen Heaven! Other reason for my liking are awesome seiyuus. Tsuboi Tomohiro as Omi, our geeky-but-cool-guy makes me purr with his playful voice and Sakurai Takahiro as Kazuki stole my heart. I was surprised when I heard Sakurai at Kirepapa (XD), but this one threw me off my chair. I completely forgot he was in Gakuen Heaven. Nice surprise~~

Or rather, great surprise. Besides Sakurai being my favourite seiyuu, his role as my favourite character from Gakuen Heaven made me squeal as a good fangirl´s should. Kazuki is one of those characters you can´t but love. He´s knight in shiny armor, always protecting Keita and ready to sacrifice himself when needed. Also, his relationship with Keita is long-termed, not some sudden teenage romance. Kazuki is probably over 20 years old (it´s never said how old he really is…), giving him some level headness and steadyness. He´s enough reason to watch this series.

About yaoi. Besides Kazuki and Keita´s relationship, you are introduced to many other pairs. Most of them are deep friendship portrayed suggestive. Characters show affection to each other, but it doesn´t lead to anything. There´s nothing too graphic in Gakuen Heaven. One kiss, hugging and lots of flirting and longing. So even those that are new to genre can enjoy this without embarrassment.

All in all, Gakuen Heaven is an great yaoi anime, but if you remove that factor, it turns into clichéd high school romance-comedy. However, Gakuen Heaven doesn´t leave a plot open. Ending doesn´t leave any chance for a second season and it´s happy one. It´s an cute series which leaves you in good mood. I recommend Gakuen Heaven to everyone who like pretty boys and romance. It´s absolutely worth your time.
